Character Trait
King Lear was a vain and temperamental man. He asked his daughter to flatter him as the requirement of having his land and he was very angry when Cordelia told him she had nothing to say! He even drove his daughter away because of it. It also showed that how obstinate and impulsive he was. However, he had a enormous change after he realized Goneril and Regan were both evil, he has been transformed from a tyrant to a simple man who was clear-minded and love truly but not because of any gain.
Goneril was a cruel and vicious daughter. She pretended to be a good daughter in King Lear’s mind, but she was not. When King Lear had given all his lands out, she became rude and mean to his father and even asked King Lear to leave hers castle! Besides, she was disloyal to Duke of Albany, she tempted Edmund and rival her sister Regan. At last, love made her blind, she poisoned Regan and suicide herself at the end of the story.
Regan is the second daughter of King Lear. She is anungrateful and mean lady. Just like her elder sister Goneril, she provokes King Lear and told him he was old enough and should said sorry to Goneril. Besides, she was evil. When she knew Gloucester is a traitor, she laughed evilly and said to the servant don’t be kind to Gloucester. In addition, she even did not stop Cornwall to blind Gloucester and she also killed the servant who prevent Cornwall do not blind Gloucester without any regretful.
Cordelia is a kind, clear-minded, forgiving and caring person. She is kind to her father and the reason behind is during the King was dividing the land to his daughter, she doesn’t act like her sister to please the King, she told the truth. She is clear-minded because she said to Regan “I know what you are doing.” after the land division. She knew that her sister just wanted to please their father because they want to get the land and then her sister will treat their father in a bad way. She is forgiving because she doesn’t mind what her father said before (I will no longer be your father anymore). She is a caring person because she takes care of his father very well when she saw her father in his father own kingdom again. She is a girl who hates hypocrisy also. In addition, she doesn’t like her sister at all. She thinks them they are hypocritical.
Gloucester is a gullible and foolish man. He trusted people easily and lacked inside to Edmund truth nature. When Edmund gave a letter which about Edgar was betraying and wanting to kill him, he really trusted Edmund without any prove. So he paid dearly for his mistake. Besides, Gloucester also is loyal to King Lear. He was blinded by Cornwall because he didn’t tell Cornwall where did Lear go. In addition, he wanted to find King Lear and stayed beside him even through he was blinded.
Edgar is a brother noble. He spends most of the play disguised as the mad beggar Poor Tom. At the beginning, Edgar complete trust in Edmund seems rather foolish and naïve. Edgar has endured awful hardships and been misrepresented by one he trusted to one he loved. After he disguised as Poor Tom, he still care his father Gloucester and King Lear. He even bring them to Dover, kill Edmund for his father death.

He wanted to be the Earl and all Gloucester’s money, so he lied to his father that he brother Edgar would like to killed him and successfully set Edgar against Gloucester. On the other hand, he pretended to be a good brother to Edgar and made Edgar fall into his artifice. Besides, he was very unscrupulous. He tempted Goneril and Regan, who already married with Duke of Albany and Duke of Cornwall and both Goneril and Regan died because of him at the end of story.
Albany is a just man because when his wife, Goneril did some bad behavior to King Lear, he did not approve Goneril and scolds her but dares not oppose her. He is also a person that treasure the relationship around all people, because he loves his wife dearly , and this makes him once blind to her evilness but his better side is revealed as just man a after his discovers Gooneril’s ture nature.
Cornwall is not a kind and gentle duke. He was a cruel violent and even evil-minded man. He blinded Gloucester without any thinking and feeling. When his kind servant, who served him for many years, try to prevent him to take out Gloucester’s eyes, Cornwall attacked the servant.
King of France is a very loving man. When he knew King Lear wanted to send Cordelia away because of her unkind words, he still asked Cordelia to go with him. This showsthat he is a faithful King to his beloved.

(Cordelia lay over a table; King Lear was sitting next to she; servant, Edgar and Albany were standing next to King Lear)
Lear: (breathing) here…(getting out a piece of parchment from his clothes, pass it over to Edgar and Albany)
Albany: (confusing, look at the paper) My King? What’s that?
(Edgar took the paper and spread it on the floor)
Edgar: (surprised) Oh, my lord…
Lear: (sadly) I will never forget this nightmare…(shake his head slowly)(Frame turn to the map)
ActⅡ, Scene 1
(In the hall of King Lear castle)
(Enter Goneril, Regan, Cordelia, Cornwall, Albany and King of France; King Lear stood in front of a table, there’s a map on it)
Lear: I do not want to rule my kingdom anymore. (Looked at the map) I have separated my kingdom into three parts. (Turned to his three daughters) I will give the best part of my kingdom to the daughter who loves me most. Goneril, you are the eldest, speak first.
Goneril: (Confident) Sir, I love you as much as I love my life, my health, my beauty and my honour. I cannot put into words how much I love you. (Smile to King)
(Cordelia looked at Goneril and took a big breath)
Lear: (joyful) I will give all the land between (pointing at the map) these two lines on the map to you, your husband Albany and your children.
(Regan despised Goneril)
(Turned to Regan) How about you, our dearest Regan?
Regan: My lord, I love you as much as my sister, but she has not said enough.
(Dignified) Nothing pleases me except my love for you. My only happiness comes from my love for you.
Lear: (Pleased) Great, you can get a third of my kingdom!
(Regan smiled and nodded her head)
Lear: (Turn to Cordelia) Now, shall I give you the richest part of my kingdom? Shall I give you more than I gave your sister? Cordelia, speak!
Cordelia: (Big breath) I can say nothing, my lord.
(Everyone turns to she)
Lear: (Surprised) Nothing?
Cordelia: (Resolute) Nothing.
Lear: (Friendly) Nothing will bring you nothing. Speak again.
Cordelia: (Shake head) I cannot put my feeling into words. You gave me life, loved me. So of course I love you. But I am not same as my sister. When I marry, I will give my husband half my love. (Nodded head) I am saying the truth, my lord.
Lear: (shaking with anger) Truth? Right, from now on, I will not be your father anymore.
King of France: What a shock! How come you treat your favourite daughter in this way?
Cordelia: (Softly) Because I do not have a tongue like my sister, but I am glad with that.

(Goneril and Regan smile wickedly)

(In the Earl of Gloucester castle)
(Edmund sits on a bench; holding a letter, enter Gloucester)

Edmund: Well, someone passed it in through my window. (Gloucester took it slowly and looked) Edgar believes that it is wrong for sons to wait until their fathers die of old age. I just want to enlighten him.

(Wild place; Edgar walked alone and saw Gloucester)
Edgar: (worried, sad) What’s happening, my friend?

(Outside Albany’s castle; Goneril and Edmund walked, servant comes to them)

Goneril: (Hold Edmund’s hand) I think I do not love Albany anymore starting from appears of you. I will be your woman, if you kill Albany.

(Gloucester’s castle; Regan walked and playing with her hair; a servant carried a letter)

(In a tent; Lear slept next to a doctor; Albany stood; enter Cordelia)
Cordelia: (Worried, turn to Albany) How did you find my father?
Albany: When your servants want to catch him, I was there. So I just bring the King to you.
Cordelia: (Unbelievable) Thanks my dear. I owe you. You are such a nice man. I am so worried about my father since I heard the news that my sisters make him mad. (Turn to Lear) This kiss will make you feel better. (Hold his hands) My two sisters have done great harm to you.
(Lear opens his eyes)
Lear: (Pleased) What a pretty young lady! Who are you? Are you in heaven with me?
Cordelia: (Sadly) No, sir. You are in your own kingdom. I am your daughter. Forever.
Lear: (Joyful) Oh my dearest child! Please forgive me; I know you will hate me.
Cordelia: (nicely) No, I do not hate you! I will help you!
Lear: Yes dear daughter. Please forgive me. I am old and foolish.
Albany: I must go now, there is a battle waiting for me.
Cordelia: I will bless you, good luck.
(Exit Albany)

(Outside the tent; Edgar stood and wait for Albany)
Albany: (Strange) Are you…?
Edgar: I think we have seen; when someone wanted to kill Gloucester, remember? Here is a letter, given by Regan’s servant. If you win in this battle, send for me. I can bring someone who will prove that the words in this letter are true.

(Goneril and Regan are quarrelling; Edmund pleased because he won; Albany comes)
Goneril: (push Regan) Shut up! Edmund loves me!

(Fought, Edmund was wounded, they fell their sword onto ground, and Edmund fell)

Servant: my good lord; I am the very man. That, from your first of difference and decay, Have follow'd your sad steps Nor no man else: all's cheerless, dark, and deadly.
Lear: You are welcome hither. Do you see this? Look on her, look, her lips, Look there, look there!
(King Lear takes a big breath, dead; Edgar, Albany and servant were knelling)
Edgar: He faints! My lord, my lord!
Servant: Look up, my lord.
Edgar: He is gone, indeed.
Albany: Bear them from hence. Our present business Is general woe.
(Edgar, Albany and Servant stand up)
Edgar: Friends of my soul, you twain Rule in this realm, and the gored state sustain.
Servant: I have a journey, sir, shortly to go; My master calls me, I must not say no.
Albany: The weight of this sad time we must obey; Speak what we feel, not what we ought to say.
Edgar: we that are young Shall never see so much, nor live so long.

Cordelia: You are clever and you hide your faults. In time, people will see the truth.
(Exit with King of France)
Lear: (Clam, turned to Goneril and Regan) For you two, I will stay with each of you for one month.
Goneril: (Proud, squint at Regan) Sir, I suppose you will stay with me first, right?
Lear: (nodded head) Sure.
ActⅡ, Scene 2
(In the Earl of Gloucester castle)
(Edmund sits on a bench; holding a letter, enter Gloucester)
Gloucester: (Hands back) Edmund, why are you sitting alone? (Look at the letter) What’s that?
Edmund: Well, someone passed it in through my window. (Gloucester took it slowly and looked) Edgar believes that it is wrong for sons to wait until their fathers die of old age. I just want to enlighten him.
Gloucester: Come on, Edmund. (Pull Edmund up) Find him. Make him trust you and tell you what he intends to do.
Edmund: Yes, my lord.
(Exit Edmund)
ActⅡ, Scene 3
(In the Earl of Gloucester castle)
(Edmund’s room, Edmund drank alcohol; enter Edgar)
Edgar: (Happily) Hey, you are here. I just want to …
Edmund: (Bad mood, interrupted) Our father is angry with you now.
Edgar: (Amaze) What? (Nodded head) There’s an evil person has spoken against me.
Edmund: (worried) He has ordered me to make you a prisoner. Take out your sword; pretend to defend yourself.
(Edmund and Edgar pull out their sword, pretend to fight)
(Footstep sounds)
Edgar: (scare) Oh! Our father is coming!
Edmund: (nervous) You don’t have other choice, escape! Run away!
(Edgar ran out, enter Gloucester)
Edmund: (unbearable) Sir, I tried to make him give up his plot against you but I failed. (Throw out his sword) I know I am a poor bastard, no one will believe me.
Gloucester: Devil! (Comfort him; hold his shoulders) You are my good son. You will have all my land when I die. I will order all my knights to look for him.
(Exit Gloucester)
Edmund: (Smile wickedly, shake head) Gloucester, you already control by me.

(Goneril house)
(Goneril quarrel with Lear)
Goneril: (Loudly) Listen, sir! Your knights are always quarrelling; my house is in disorder. I won’t accept that!
Lear: (looking angry) You mean it?
Goneril: (wicked laugh) Such a silly question! (Shout angrily) Be sensible! You are old! You should be wise, why do you need to keep 100 knights? (Softly) I beg you, send them away.
Lear: (Fury; push Goneril back) Darkness and devils! I make a mistake when I trusted you. You will be severely punished soon!
(Exit Lear)
ActⅢ, Scene 2
(In the Earl of Gloucester castle)
(Edmund’s room, Edmund sat on the bed; enter Regan and Cornwall)
Regan: (Turn to Edmund) Where’s Gloucester?
Edmund: (look at she strangely) Just gone to find Edgar. He is trying to kill Gloucester.
Regan: (look at him sweetly) So…wasn’t Edgar a friend of those knights who came to my house with my father?
Edmund: Yes, he was.
Cornwall: (turn to Regan) I will look for Gloucester, wait me.
(Regan nodded her head; exit Cornwall)
(Edmund disguise painfully)
Regan: (Walk close to Edmund) Um…did Edgar hurt you? Are you feeling well?
Edmund: (Smile softly, hold Regan’s hand) Yes, my charming young lady.
(Regan smiled, feel delighted, Enter Gloucester, Lear)
Regan: (look unhappy) Oh, sir. I am happy to see you.
Lear: Of course, my dear daughter, your sister has been so unkind to me.
Regan: Well, (evil smile) ask her to forgive you, let us help you.
Lear: (Surprised, angry) You will never hurt me! And I won’t return to Goneril’s house!
Someone: (devil laugh) Really?
(Enter Goneril)
Lear: (Try to clam down) Well, I will not trouble you again, see you. (Try to go)
Regan: (Hateful) No, I won’t expect you. You should send twenty-five followers away; my servants will look after you.
Goneril: (turn to Lear) Twenty-five? How about ten?
Regan: (turn to Goneril) Why does he need any followers?
Lear: (Mad) No! Do you think you will make me weep? No, I will not weep. My heart will break into a thousand pieces before I weep.
(Lear runs away, followed by Gloucester; enter Cornwall)
Cornwall: (turn to Regan) It’s going to rain, why the king went out?
Goneril: (turn to Cornwall) It is his fault. Let him suffer.
ActⅢ, Scene 3
(Lear shouted; enter edgar)
Lear: (Sadly, cried) Oh, I am here, you servant…
Edgar: Poor Tom is cold! The devil wants my life!
(Enter Gloucester)
Gloucester: (turn to Lear and Poor Tom) Come, you must be very tired.
(Gloucester brought edgar and Lear into warm place, Lear fell asleep)
Gloucester: (turn to Edgar) My friend, someone want to kill the king, will you try to go away with us to Dover?
Edgar: Yes, let me carried the Lord.
ActⅣ, Scene 1
(In the Earl of Gloucester castle; Cornwall, Regan and Goneril talked to Edmund)
Regan: What? Gloucester is a traitor?
Goneril: (Look at the letter with Edmund held) Is it the French army going to attack you? I need to tell this to Albany; (ask Edmund) may you go with me?
(Exit Edmund and Goneril, enter Gloucester with two servants)
Regan: (Rude) Tie him up! The traitor!
Cornwall: (order) Sit, where did you send the King?
Gloucester: (Bravely) Dover. I do not want your evil fingers take out his poor eyes and broke his heart! You are devil children!
Cornwall: (Mad) Fine, Then I will take out your eyes!
(A servant ran and wounded Cornwall; Regan push the servant and use her feet to step on him, blood spurted my the servant)
Servant: (painfully) My master, he will be punished! (Dead)
Cornwall: Say goodbye to your sight! (Evil laugh, took out his eyes)
Gloucester: (Shouted) Edmund! Where’s Edmund?
Regan: (To servant) Throw him out of the gates and let him smell his way to Dover. Edmund hates you, traitor!
(Cornwall fell down and dead)
Regan: (Next to him) My dear, I will let you know your death is worth!
ActⅣ, Scene 2
(Wild place; Edgar walked alone and saw Gloucester)
Edgar: (worried, sad) What’s happening, my friend?
(Edgar took out a cloth and wrap Gloucester’s eyes)
Gloucester: (Hold Edgar’s hands) Thanks my friend, do you know the way to Dover?
Edgar: Yes, give me your arm; Poor Tom will lead you.
ActⅣ, Scene 3
(Outside Albany’s castle; Goneril and Edmund walked, servant comes to them)
Servant: Madam, your husband received a message just now. He knew all the things. He is so angry.
Goneril: (smile) Who care? (Order) Do you stuff, don’t let he knows you meet me.
(Exit Servant)
Goneril: (Hold Edmund’s hand) I think I do not love Albany anymore starting from appears of you. I will be your woman, if you kill Albany.
Edmund: Is it a trade? My lady?
Goneril: Maybe. You may think it is a fate of us.
(Hug each other)
ActⅤ, Scene 1
(Gloucester’s castle; Regan walked and playing with her hair; a servant carried a letter)
Regan: (Asked servant) What’s that? (Take away) From Goneril to Edmund? (Softy) I knew she loved Edmund through her strangely sight to Edmund. (Turn to servant) Tell your lady that Edmund is my man; he loves me, not your lady. Besides, I need to find Gloucester; I will give a lot to the person who kills him.
ActⅤ, Scene 2
(In a tent; Lear slept next to a doctor; Albany stood; enter Cordelia)
Cordelia: (Worried, turn to Albany) How did you find my father?
Albany: When your servants want to catch him, I was there. So I just bring the King to you.
Cordelia: (Unbelievable) Thanks my dear. I owe you. You are such a nice man. I am so worried about my father since I heard the news that my sisters make him mad. (Turn to Lear) This kiss will make you feel better. (Hold his hands) My two sisters have done great harm to you.
(Lear opens his eyes)
Lear: (Pleased) What a pretty young lady! Who are you? Are you in heaven with me?
Cordelia: (Sadly) No, sir. You are in your own kingdom. I am your daughter. Forever.
Lear: (Joyful) Oh my dearest child! Please forgive me; I know you will hate me.
Cordelia: (nicely) No, I do not hate you! I will help you!
Lear: Yes dear daughter. Please forgive me. I am old and foolish.
Albany: I must go now, there is a battle waiting for me.
Cordelia: I will bless you, good luck.
(Exit Albany)
ActⅤ, Scene 3
(Outside the tent; Edgar stood and wait for Albany)
Albany: (Strange) Are you…?
Edgar: I think we have seen; when someone wanted to kill Gloucester, remember? Here is a letter, given by Regan’s servant. If you win in this battle, send for me. I can bring someone who will prove that the words in this letter are true.
(Exit Edgar)
ActⅥ, Scene 1
(Goneril and Regan are quarrelling; Edmund pleased because he won; Albany comes)
Goneril: (push Regan) Shut up! Edmund loves me!
Edmund: I will become the new Earl of Gloucester!
Albany: (Kick Edmund) Shut up you devil man! (Turn to Goneril) And you, devil woman, stop it! You all are traitors!
(Regan suddenly faint)
Regan: (Softy) Wait, I feel dizzy…
Albany: (Turn to servant) Take she into the tent!
(Enter Edgar)
Edgar: (Carried a sword) Come on! Pull out your sword! You were disloyal to your brother, your father and Lord Albany. You are traitor!
Edmund: (Friendly) Then, (evilly) my sword will answer you!
(Fought, Edmund was wounded, they fell their sword onto ground, and Edmund fell)
Goneril: (Cried) No! (Run next to Edmund) This is a trick! By the laws of war, you do not have to fight an enemy unless you know his name! My dearest!
Albany: Shut up month or else I will shut it with this paper! (Waved her letter)
(Scream, Goneril ran out)
(Edgar takes off his mud and clothes)
Albany: Oh! You are Edgar! You are the one who with Gloucester!
Edgar: (stands next to Edmund) I told my father who I was. I told him everything. But it was too much happiness and sadness for him. He dead.
(Enter servant with a bloody knife)
Servant: My master, your lady has killed herself! She also poisoned Regan because of her love for Edmund!
Edmund: Listen, I told my soldiers to kill Lear and Cordelia. Send people to there to save them!
(Albany and Edgar ran out)
ActⅥ, Scene 2
(In a small tent)
(Cordelia lay over a table; King Lear was sitting next to she; servant, Edgar and Albany were standing next to King Lear)
Lear: A plague upon you, murderers, traitors all! I might have saved her; now she's gone for ever! Cordelia, Cordelia! stay a little. Ha! What is't thou say'st? Her voice was ever soft, Gentle, and low, an excellent thing in woman. I kill'd the slave that was a-hanging thee.
Servant: my good lord; I am the very man. That, from your first of difference and decay, Have follow'd your sad steps Nor no man else: all's cheerless, dark, and deadly.
Lear: You are welcome hither. Do you see this? Look on her, look, her lips, Look there, look there!
(King Lear takes a big breath, dead; Edgar, Albany and servant were knelling)
Edgar: He faints! My lord, my lord!
Servant: Look up, my lord.
Edgar: He is gone, indeed.
Albany: Bear them from hence. Our present business Is general woe.
(Edgar, Albany and Servant stand up)
Edgar: Friends of my soul, you twain Rule in this realm, and the gored state sustain.
Servant: I have a journey, sir, shortly to go; My master calls me, I must not say no.
Albany: The weight of this sad time we must obey; Speak what we feel, not what we ought to say.
Edgar: we that are young Shall never see so much, nor live so long.
